Posthumous Honors for Ida B. Wells

During her lifetime Ida B. Wells faced many challenges in her quest for justice. Although extremely well known during her time, her legacy has grown over the decades. She has been inducted into halls of fame, received posthumous awards, and many honors. Her great-grandchildren who manage the Foundation have consulted on many of the below projects.

2025

Ida B Wells is one of the 20 women selected by the United States Mint to be honored with U.S. Quarter as part of the American Women Quarters Program  (5 women each over 4 years from 2022-2025)  She is one of 5 in the final group which was released in 2025.  Order the quarters through the United States Mint.

2022

January 11 - Ida B. Wells Barbie doll launched by Mattel as part of Inspiring Women Series


March 27 - Dedication ceremony for Equality Trailblazers Suffrage Monument in Memphis, TN. Ida B. Wells is one of 13 featured.


March 27 - Fourth Street renamed Ida B. Wells Street in Memphis, TN


December 15 - Inducted into Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience Hall of Fame


2021 

June 30 - Light of Truth: Ida B. Wells National Monument installed


July 16 - Ida B. Wells statue and plaza installed in Memphis, TN 


May 16 - Dedication ceremony for Turning Point Suffragist Memorial in Lorton, VA which includes Ida B. Wells


January - Woodrow Wilson High School in Portland, OR changed their name to Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School


2020 

May 4 - Awarded posthumous  Pulitzer Prize  Special Citation 


May 13 - 2nd edition of Crusade for Justice published

February 11 -  Ida B. Wells Drive street sign unveiling ceremony  


July 13 - Unveiling of historical marker in town square of Holly Springs, Mississippi


July 16 - Shelby County, Tennessee declared Ida B. Wells' July 16th birthday as Ida B. Wells Day


July 20 - Unveiling of historical marker and honorary Ida B. Wells Way at 37th and King Drive in Chicago


August - Inducted into Mississippi Writers Trail


2018 

March 8 - Posthumous obituary in The New York Times


July 25 - Major downtown Chicago street Congress Parkway renamed to Ida B. Wells Drive 


2011 Inducted into Chicago Literary Hall of Fame


2010 - Room co-named after Ida B. Wells in United States Senate Russell Building


2002 - Ida B. Wells Homes started to be torn down (last building gone in 2011)


1996 - The Ida B. Wells Family Art Gallery was established in Holly Springs, MS . The name  was changed to the Ida B. Wells-Barnett Museum in 2002.


1995 - Oct 2 - Ida B. Wells-Barnett's house designated a Chicago Landmark


1991 - Post office in her hometown of Holly Springs, MS renamed to Ida B. Wells Station


1990 - United States Postal Service issued stamp as part of Black Heritage series


1989 - Documentary film, Ida B. Wells:  A Passion for Justice, directed by William Greaves, aired on PBS' The American Experience Series 


1988  

The Ida B. Wells Memorial Foundation was started by five of her grandchildren.


Inducted into National Women's Hall of Fame


1987 - Historic marker placed on Beale Street


1985 - Inducted into Tennessee Newspaper Hall of Fame


1974  - Ida B. Wells-Barnett's house at 3624 S. King Drive gained  National Landmark status


1970  - Her autobiography, Crusade for Justice, edited by her daughter, Alfreda M. Duster, was published


1941 - Ida B. Wells Homes opened in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood
